It is necessary to arrange it in a harmonious manner and following very precise criteria, otherwise you could run into unpleasant perspective views and not. Its application must be precise and clean, glue or other residues must never be seen. A material used is lichen, which must be shaded in order to be more appropriate in the context. If you want to buy high quality lichen, already treated, contact me! To make grass and bushes a mixture is created with sawdust, vinyl glue and green-yellow color. The mixture is applied in the crib and, once dried, it is worked with a spatula, in order to obtain filaments and bushes. When it is completely dry, apply yellow or ocher. The largest and most luxuriant bushes are made with finely chopped moss combined with vinyl glue and color. The bushes can be surrounded by pebbles and shades of color to make them more natural.

Trees

To make a tree you always start from the trunk, it’s up to us to decide whether to use a natural trunk, collecting twigs and woods, or to create one completely artificial.

If you opt for the second choice it is necessary to get yourself some wire that is implanted on a solid base, to the wire the wadding is applied with the help of the vinyl glue and covered with a layer of plaster. The gypsum layer must be made rough, to do this we can use a wire brush, or we can sculpt it with special tools. After we pass to the coloring, we spread a brown background color, in a generous way, not caring about the smears, we must make sure that every point of the surface has acquired the color.

Once the background color has dried, we can proceed with the nuances. Our trunk is ready to accommodate the foliage that will be made with foam rubber. In the case of cypresses, the foam rubber is cut with scissors and shaped, making it possible to get as close as possible to the typical shape of the cypress, or a long and pointed crown. The foam rubber needs a support wire.

We mix vinyl glue, sawdust or minced foam and color (dark green) and with the brush we begin to apply the mixture. This step must be repeated several times, waiting for the various dryings. To refine and make it natural, we look carefully at examples in nature.

Last with the application of colors and shades, I remind you of using dark tones at the bottom and light tones at the top. The trees are fixed on wooden or polystyrene bases, shred the foam rubber to obtain a realistic crown. Depending on the arrangement of the trees, we will work on the details.

How to make trees and bushes

A method widely used for the creation of trees and bushes is that of iron wire.

This technique is adopted for the creation of small trees and bushes. In order to get a realistic creation, I suggest you observe the natural elements live and scrutinize every little detail; nature offers an infinite range of nuances and details, so it is good to look closely and then dedicate ourselves to our creations. After this premise we can start:

take a malleable wire, with a soft consistency, and shape it to create the supporting structure of the tree. Pay attention to the thicknesses, the wire close to the branches must necessarily have a thinner structure, I also advise you to affix strands of branches to the end of the branches, so as to simulate small branches. After the structure we can pass to the base which is obtained by mixing plaster or white cement with vinyl glue (the common white glue) and walnut-colored or earth-colored acrylic pigment (many use the land of natural shade in powder). This base makes it possible to give the iron structure a realistic base that can be perfected with the use of metal brushes and awls that allow to obtain definition and roughness, typical of tree trunks. After we proceed with the application of thyme, lichen and other with vinyl glue, in this regard I suggest you to buy from this site the high quality thyme in my possession and the precious teloxys, taken care of and well selected by the undersigned. Finally we proceed with the coloring, which can be done with the airbrush or simply with brushes with medium / hard bristles based on the nuances we want to achieve. A tip for coloring is to apply softer tones in bass and darker ones on the top surface.

Foam rubber trees and shrubs

A material used for the creation of the foliage of shrubs and trees is foam rubber.

The foam rubber must undergo some treatments before being used.

In the first place it must be chopped, it can be pulverized with the use of a metal rasp or with a blender. If you use the blender you need to add to the foam rubber of the water to be able to chop it.
Another way to work the foam rubber is to join it to acrylic to allow drying and consequently the pulverization, the foam rubber can be dried even with the addition of vinyl glue, but in small quantities.
After these treatments I recommend sieving it, to obtain a homogeneous and easily applicable powder.

In order to make trees we can use another technique, much more natural, that is the one that involves the collection of dry twigs, which when properly assembled give life to extremely realistic trees. If you are interested in this technique, I supply on request, dried twigs of thyme, rosemary, etc., already treated and selected for info contact me! I have already mentioned to you a plant that lends itself very well to this kind of creations, I’m talking about the TELOXIS ARISTATA.

It has very thin, thread-like branches, this feature allows to obtain surprising and highly real results, I darn you the ARISTATA TELOXIS provided by me, of excellent quality, expertly selected and treated, my creations are the proof of the results that can be obtained . The aforesaid twigs, must be assembled, following their own model, to join them we can use iron wire (the one used by florists for instance) or hot glue. For the adherence of the treated foam rubber, on the structure, we use spray glue or extra strong fixing hair spray. Different colors must be given to the minced and treated foam rubber, taking into account the season we want to represent. The foaming of the foam takes place before its application on the base, and takes place with the following method:

application of pigment with alcohol, or with acrylics strictly diluted in water.
After the application of the foam rubber, the canopy can be made shiny with the use of transparent sprays specifically designed to give shine and vitality.

The foliage

Two techniques can be used to obtain the foliage:

or the purchase of synthetic foliage is used, if you are interested in buying I remind you that my site also offers the possibility of buying high quality synthetic foliage;
or you can use spices, such as oregano, thyme treated with alcohol and pigment to give the most appropriate breakfast to our creation.
Grass

To simulate the grass in our dioramas, we can resort to commercially available synthetic fiber herbs (especially in my very well-stocked site, with accompanying advice).

If instead, we want to personally create grass, we must equip ourselves with

straw
hemp, the latter would be the one used by plumbers.

These materials must be chopped up and then immersed in color (water colors, or synthetic thinners that can bring realistic gradations).

The grass created must be fixed with hot glue or vinyl glue, but be careful to make the right quantities, the glue must not be visible, it is worth the beauty and cleanliness of the diorama.

With the sieve it is possible to adhere in a sparse way the grass filaments where it seems appropriate to insert it. It is important to pay attention to the color of the soil and to that of the grass, the contrast must be measured and realistic, the adjustments in this situation are necessary and take place using acrylic water colors, or the use of the airbrush.

Hemp processing

To get the grass with hemp, you need:

two wooden floors,
hot glue
water colors.

Lay the hemp on a flat surface, press with the second wooden top, leaving some of the hemp stick out.

The hemp that remains outside must be fixed with hot glue on both sides.

Once this is done wet the hemp in the color, the immersion must last at least 24 hours, then proceed with the drying.

Once dried the hemp can be cut and used in our diorama.

This technique is suitable for dense bundles of grass and for vines, if we want to obtain thin filaments of grass it is necessary to proceed in another way.

Finely cut the hemp before coloring, arrange the filaments on a flat surface, color them with a water color in a spray container and wait for them to dry completely.

Moss

A widely used natural element is moss (on the shop section you will find moss and mat lichen, of excellent quality, ready to use for info do not hesitate to contact me).

The moss does not have to be fresh to be able to work easily and obtain excellent results.

Another important note, the moss must be finely chopped, then it must be combined with the vinyl glue diluted in water, pigment, sawdust.

The mixture obtained must not be damp, so dose the ingredients so as to obtain a more solid dough. Then we proceed with the drying and arranged in the position that we previously decided.

Moss is indicated for the creation of small bushes and grass.

Agave

Another plant used is the agave.

This plant should be cut into strips and then shaped with laminations for overhangs, or other makeshift tools in our possession. The center of the agave, which will host the leaves, can be created with DAS or polystyrene.

The leaves are always glued with vinavil glue.

Agave is always colored with acrylic colors, getting the right color requires attention, the greenery of this plant is special; the right shade should be obtained with the mixture of green with black, white and yellow tips. The plant has thorns, so it is necessary with black, to reproduce this characteristic.

The Palm

Key element of the Palestinian dioramas or in any case orientalizing.

The leaves of this impressive tree are obtained with cardboard or special fabrics, in particular the cloth.

Arrange the wires on a wooden surface, overlay the cardboard or fabric, sprinkle everything with vinyl glue, once the drying is finished, draw the shape and cut out. To obtain the typical fringe of the palm leaves, proceed with the diagonal cutting of the edges of the leaf.

For the construction of the trunk, with particular characteristics, various methods can be used:

The first involves the construction of the structure in polystyrene or polyurethane, on which a thin layer of das is applied which will be subsequently carved so as to simulate the typical trunk of a palm tree. The sheet of das must be shaped with the cylindrical polystyrene in order to proceed with the incision that occurs with the use of the cutter or commonly known as a cutter.
The second option is to engrave a cylinder created with polystyrene or even better, for its composition and resistance, with polyurethane; it is engraved with a special tool, which can be the cutter or the awl, until the pre-set result is reached. Subsequently it is last with the coloring, in this case only the use of water colors is allowed, paying attention to the nuances we want to obtain.

If the palm obtained has an imposing height, it is necessary to introduce some iron wire, in order to allow a curvature of the tree and consequently a more realistic creation.

The leaves are applied to the trunk with wire, at this point we can also simulate the typical fruits of this plant, placed under the foliage.

For the production of palm dates, we can buy millet and color it with orange, for small trees we can use beads that can be purchased in haberdashery.

We take care of the coloring of the trunk in detail, creating realistic light shades, we arrange the leaves in a harmonious way, alternating leaves of different sizes. A further color pass will allow you to conceal defects and make everything uniform, a spray of lacquer will make our tree even more polished. Good job!!!
